Ο διεθνούς φήμης Συνθέτης/Μαέστρος, Διευθυντής Σπουδών “Ωδείου των Χρωμάτων”, Ομότιμος Καθηγητής του Πανεπιστημίου της Βοστώνης, Πρόεδρος της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Μουσουργών, Τακτικό μέλος της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, κ. ΘΟΔΩΡΟΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΥ
Ο Θόδωρος Αντωνίου, από τους πιo διαπρεπείς και πολυγραφότατους σύγχρονους καλλιτέχνες, διάγει λαμπρή καριέρα ως συνθέτης, μαέστρος και καθηγητής πανεπιστημίου, τόσο στην Ελλάδα, όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Σπούδασε βιολί, φωνητική και σύνθεση στο Εθνικό Ωδείο Αθηνών και το Ελληνικό Ωδείο, με περαιτέρω σπουδές στη διεύθυνση και σύνθεση στη Μουσική Ακαδημία του Μονάχου και στο Διεθνές Μουσικό Κέντρο του Ντάρμστατ. Δίδαξε μουσική στα διακεκριμένα Πανεπιστήμια του Στάνφορντ και της Γιούτα των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, καθώς και στη Μουσική Ακαδημία της Φιλαδέλφειας, πριν του ανατεθεί η θέση του καθηγητή σύνθεσης στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Βοστόνης το 1978, θέση την οποία κατείχε ως τον Οκτώβριο του 2008, οπότε και ανακηρύχθηκε Ομότιμος Καθηγητής. Οι περισσότεροι Έλληνες συνθέτες της νεότερης γενιάς υπήρξαν μαθητές του.
Ως διευθυντής ορχήστρας έχει προσκληθεί να διευθύνει πολλές μεγάλες ορχήστρες και μουσικά σύνολα παγκοσμίως, όπως την Ορχήστρα Δωματίου της Συμφωνικής Ορχήστρας της Βοστόνης, τις Ορχήστρες των Ραδιοφωνιών του Βερολίνου, του Παρισιού και της Βαυαρίας, την Ορχήστρα Tonhalle της Ζυρίχης, την Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή, την Κρατική Ορχήστρα Αθηνών, την Καμεράτα, την Ορχήστρα του Μουσικού Κέντρου του Μπερκσάιερ στο Τάνγκελγουντ της Μασαχουσέτης κ.ά. Από το 1974 έως το 1985 υπήρξε συνδιευθυντής όλων των δραστηριοτήτων σύγχρονης μουσικής στο Μουσικό Κέντρο του Τάνγκελγουντ. Θερμός υποστηρικτής της σύγχρονης μουσικής, έχει ιδρύσει διάφορα σύνολα σύγχρονης μουσικής, μεταξύ αυτών την ALEA II στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Στάνφορντ, την ΑLΕA IIΙ στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Βοστόνης, το Σύνολο Νέας Μουσικής της Φιλαδέλφειας και το Ελληνικό Συγκρότημα Σύγχρονης Μουσικής. Από το 1989 κατέχει τη θέση του προέδρου της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Μουσουργών, ενώ είναι επίσης διευθυντής της Πειραματικής Λυρικής Σκηνής. Τον Μάϊο του 2014, εξελέγη τακτικό μέλος της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών στην προκυρηχθείσα έδρα στον κλάδο της Μουσικής Σύνθεσης.
Πολλές από τις συνθέσεις του Θόδωρου Αντωνίου είναι παραγγελίες μεγάλων ορχηστρών από όλον τον κόσμο και περίπου 300 έργα του έχουν εκδοθεί από τους οίκους Bärenreiter Verlag (Γερμανία), G. Schirmer (ΗΠΑ) και Φίλιππος Νάκας (Ελλάδα). Του έχουν απονεμηθεί πολλά διεθνή βραβεία και διακρίσεις, συμπεριλαμβανομένων υποτροφιών από το Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Επιχορηγήσεων των Τεχνών των ΗΠΑ, καθώς επίσης το «Βραβείο Richard Strauss» της πόλεως του Μονάχου και το «Βραβείο της πόλεως της Στουτγκάρδης» για το έργο Κοντσέρτο για βιολί. Μεταξύ άλλων, του έχουν ανατεθεί συνθέσεις έργων από τα Ιδρύματα Fromm, Guggenheim και Koussevitzky, από την πόλη του Μονάχου για τους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες του 1972, τη Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα της Βοστόνης, καθώς και από το Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών και την Ορχήστρα των Χρωμάτων. Ως συνθέτης έχει τιμηθεί για πολλά χρόνια με το βραβείο ASCAP, ενώ το 1991 του απενεμήθη το «Αριστείο Διδασκαλίας Metcalf» του Πανεπιστημίου της Βοστόνης. Το Δεκέμβριο του 1997 τιμήθηκε με το βραβείο της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών για το σύνολο της προσφοράς του στη μουσική. Τον Ιανουάριο του 2000 η Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία του απένειμε για τη μεγάλη συνεισφορά του στη μουσική το βραβείο «Δημήτρης Μητρόπουλος». Το 2004 βραβεύτηκε με το βραβείο Herder (βραβευθέντες μεταξύ άλλων υπήρξαν οι Kodály, Lutoslawski, Kurtag και Penderecki), το οποίο αφιερώνεται στη φροντίδα και την προαγωγή των πολιτιστικών σχέσεων ανάμεσα στους λαούς των κεντρο- και νοτιοανατολικών χωρών της Ευρώπης και απονέμεται σε προσωπικότητες, οι οποίες σχετίζονται με τη διαφύλαξη και την προώθηση της Ευρωπαϊκής Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς. Το 2005 ανακηρύχθηκε επίτιμος διδάκτωρ του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου, ενώ την ίδια χρονιά έλαβε επίσης το βραβείο «Distinguished Faculty Award» του Πανεπιστημίου της Βοστόνης, ένα από τα πιο διακεκριμένα βραβεία, το οποίο απονέμεται σε μέλη του Πανεπιστημίου για την εξαιρετική τους προσφορά στο χώρο της πανεπιστημιακής κοινότητας.
Τα έργα του Θόδωρου Αντωνίου είναι πολυάριθμα και ποικίλης φύσεως και περιλαμβάνουν όπερες, χορωδιακά έργα, έργα μουσικής δωματίου, έργα για σολίστ, συμφωνικά και μουσική για θέατρο και τον κινηματογράφο - τα θεατρικά και κινηματογραφικά έργα μόνον αριθμούν πάνω από 150 συνθέσεις. Από την εργογραφία του εξέχουσα θέση κατέχουν οι καντάτες Νενικήκαμεν και Προμηθέας, το Κοντσέρτο για πιάνο και οι όπερεςΒάκχες και Οιδίπους επί Κολωνώ, για την οποία έλαβε το «Βραβείο Μουσικής 1998» της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Θεατρικών και Μουσικών Κριτικών. Για την προσφορά του στο χώρο της θεατρικής μουσικής βραβεύτηκε το 1988 με το βραβείο «Κάρολος Κουν» (ήταν ο πρώτος βραβευθείς με το βραβείο αυτό), ενώ επίσης για τη μουσική του δημιουργία στο θέατρο, αλλά και τη συνολική του προσφορά στο χώρο του πολιτισμού βραβεύθηκε το 2006 με το έπαθλο «Δημήτρης Μητρόπουλος», το οποίο του απονεμήθηκε από το Κέντρο Μελέτης και Έρευνας του Ελληνικού Θεάτρου – Θεατρικό Μουσείο και την Κριτική Επιτροπή Απονομής Βραβείων σε καλλιτέχνες της σκηνής. Οι πιο πρόσφατες διακρίσεις του για την προσφορά του στον Πολιτισμό και την Εκπαίδευση είναι η απονομή του Ταξιάρχη του Τάγματος της Τιμής από τον Πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας το Φεβρουάριο του 2007 και η αναγόρευσή του ως επίτιμου διδάκτορα του Τμήματος Μουσικών Σπουδών του Εθνικού και Καποδιστριακού Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών το Δεκέμβριο 2008.
